What Is DHEA?

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands.

The adrenal glands are glands located right above your kidneys.

The DHEA hormone functions as a precursor to sex hormones.

Precursors are substances that are converted by the body into a hormone.

Many people feel that DHEA builds up bone strength, increases energy and strengthens the immune system.

The body’s production of DHEA gradually declines with age. The decline of DHEA causes the testosterone and estrogen production to dissipate as the body ages.

Some people believe the use of DHEA supplements can increase their level of DHEA hormones.

There have been numerous claims about the potential health benefits of DHEA supplements.

DHEA health benefit claims range from:

  • Supports the Adrenal Gland
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Provides additional energy
  • Improves mood and memory
  • Helps with mild to moderate depression
  • Builds up bone and muscle strength

Since it is believed the DHEA levels decline with age, some researchers speculate that supplementing the body’s falling levels of the DHEA hormone might help with the age process.

Are Lab Test able to reveal if you body produces enough DHEA?

Yes, the DHEAS lab test is an indicator if your body is not producing enough DHEA or overproducing DHEA.

Individuals with hormones diseases such as Addison’s or Hypopituitarism may have lower than average DHEA levels.

Whereas, individuals with high levels of DHEA may indicate medical conditions such as Cushings Syndrome, a adrenocortical tumor, adrenal cancer, adrenal hyperplasia, or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

In the United States of America, DHEA supplements are available in most health food stores without a medical prescription.

However, you should seek medical advise before you take any type of DHEA supplement.

I use Source Naturally 7-Keto and I take 25 mg a day.

I find if I take more than 25 mg of DHEA a day I have headaches and my skin begins to break-outs.

Each person’s Endocrine system works differently. If you think DHEA may help you then please consult your doctor before incorporating into your diet.
