What Is Sheehan’s Syndrome Caused By?

sheehans syndrome

Sheehan’s Syndrome is caused by a restriction of blood supply to the pituitary gland during or after childbirth.

A woman who hemorrhages or losses too much blood during childbirth may experience a restriction of blood supply to the pituitary gland.

The lack of blood flow to the pituitary glands can cause the pituitary gland to have immediate neurosis (die) or the pituitary gland may slowly lose function.

Over the past decade, I have read thousands of articles about What Causes Sheehan’s Syndrome, What Are The Symptoms Of Sheehan’s Syndrome, and The Treatment For Sheehan’s Syndrome.

The following are Sheehan Syndrome Resources:

Mayo Clinic

The Mayo Clinic website offers an easy to understand overview about the cause of Sheehan’s Syndrome, the symptoms of Sheehan’s Syndrome and the treatment of Sheehan’s Syndrome.

The Mayo Clinic recognizes that Sheehan’s Syndrome may not develop right after childbirth, and the disease may be difficult to diagnose.

NORD

The National Organization of Rare Diseases (NORD) provides a website compiled with useful Sheehan’s Syndrome information in an easy to read format.

The National Organization of Rare Diseases gratefully acknowledges Mark E. Molitch, MD, for his help to prepare the Sheehan’s Syndrome report.

The NORD’s Sheehan’s Syndrome Report contains:

  • General Discussion about Sheehan’s Syndrome
  • The Synonyms of Sheehan syndrome
  • Signs and Symptoms of Sheehan’s Syndrome
  • The Causes of Sheehan’s Syndrome
  • The Treatment Plan for Sheehan’s

I found it interesting that the NORD Website also mentions Antiphospholipid Syndrome as a related disorder to Sheehan’s Syndrome.

The NORD Website Notes

Related Disorders;

Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APLS) is a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by recurring blood clots that usually appear before 45 years of age.

APLS may also be associated with repeated spontaneous abortions for no apparent reason in young women.

There may be a family history of blood clotting disorders in some cases.

APLS may occur in individuals with lupus or related autoimmune diseases or as a primary syndrome in otherwise healthy individuals.

I  have little doubt that my blood clots are related to my Sheehan’s Syndrome.

I never had a clotting issue until I was stricken with Sheehan’s Syndrome Disease.
